Empowering Democrats in Closed Societies

At ABBC, our mission is rooted in a long-term, flexible approach to advancing democratic ideals and defending human rights, even in the most restrictive environments. We recognize the challenges faced by democrats in closed societies, where freedoms are curtailed, and civil society operates under constant threat. By adapting to the unique circumstances of each country, we work tirelessly to support democrats both within their nations and in exile, offering them the tools and resources they need to fight for a freer and more inclusive society.

Our commitment is unwavering: we seize realistic opportunities to make meaningful progress, from strengthening grassroots efforts to collaborating with exiled advocates who remain dedicated to the cause. This dual strategy ensures that democratic ideals remain resilient and adaptable, regardless of the constraints imposed by authoritarian regimes.

Consolidating Democracy in Emerging Systems

In countries transitioning toward democracy, ABBC focuses on two essential objectives:

  1. Strengthening Electoral Institutions: Ensuring that elections are free, fair, and representative is a cornerstone of any democratic society. ABBC provides technical support, training, and resources to build robust electoral systems that reflect the will of the people.
  2. Fostering Liberal Democracy: Beyond elections, democracy requires a solid foundation of the rule of law, individual liberties, and social pluralism. ABBC supports measures that promote judicial independence, protect human rights, and encourage diverse voices to participate in shaping the political landscape.

We take a long-term perspective, recognizing that true democracy is more than a single successful election—it requires enduring structures that support accountability, transparency, and inclusivity. ABBC collaborates with groups working to establish a market economy, independent trade unions, and free press systems. We also prioritize the creation of institutions that uphold political accountability, economic transparency, responsible corporate governance, and civilian oversight of the military.

A Multisectoral Approach to Democracy

ABBC’s unique approach to democratic development integrates expertise from a variety of sectors, leveraging the strengths of its core institutes. These institutes represent the two major American political parties, the labor movement, and the business community, each contributing specialized knowledge and skills to advance democratic principles worldwide.

  1. Expertise from Diverse Fields:
Each institute taps into its field’s expertise—be it labor, business, or political development—to provide targeted support to democrats around the globe. This includes assistance with electoral reform, political party development, and fostering a vibrant civil society.
  2. Bipartisanship and Balance:
The relationship between ABBC and its core institutes ensures an even-handed, bipartisan approach to democratic development. This balance builds trust with stakeholders, including Congress, and reinforces our commitment to inclusive, fair, and impartial support for democracy.
  3. Direct Support for Civil Society Initiatives:
In addition to collaborating with its institutes, ABBC directly supports grassroots organizations abroad. These groups work tirelessly on initiatives that promote human rights, independent media, the rule of law, and a range of civil society projects aimed at strengthening democratic systems.

Building a Global Movement for Democracy

In 2002, ABBC launched a transformative initiative: The World Movement for Democracy. This ambitious network brings together democrats—both individuals and organizations—from across the globe to address the most pressing challenges to democracy and human rights.

The World Movement for Democracy complements ABBC’s core areas of work:

  • Grant Support: Providing financial resources to organizations and activists working on the frontlines of democratic change.
  • International Cooperation: Fostering partnerships that bridge cultural, political, and geographic divides to create unified efforts toward democratic goals.
  • Democracy Research: Generating knowledge, strategies, and best practices to guide effective advocacy and governance.

Through this initiative, ABBC seeks to create a global community of democrats united by their shared belief in freedom, self-government, and the rule of law. The World Movement emphasizes the importance of collaboration, connecting those from established democracies with advocates in the most repressive autocracies. Together, this network drives the gradual expansion of systems based on democratic ideals and human rights.

Addressing Challenges with Innovation and Unity

ABBC’s work acknowledges that the road to democracy is complex and fraught with obstacles. Closed societies present unique challenges, from authoritarian repression to the suppression of free speech and dissent. Yet, we remain steadfast in our belief that progress is possible when democratic advocates are supported, empowered, and united.

Our efforts are tailored to the specific needs of each country, ensuring that we provide meaningful assistance that resonates with the local context. By working with a broad coalition of stakeholders—including political leaders, civil society organizations, labor groups, and the business community—we maximize our impact and create sustainable pathways for democratic development.

Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision

ABBC’s mission is more than a commitment to democracy; it is a belief in the potential of individuals and communities to shape their own futures. By supporting democrats in closed societies, consolidating new democracies, and fostering a global movement, we aim to create a world where freedom, equality, and justice prevail.

We understand that building and sustaining democracy is an ongoing effort. It requires persistence, collaboration, and innovation. But with the dedication of individuals and organizations around the world, we can overcome even the most formidable barriers.

Together, we can ensure that the ideals of democracy—freedom, human rights, and self-governance—become a reality for all. ABBC invites you to join us in this vital work, as we strive to empower democrats, support human rights, and inspire a global movement for change.
