62% of immigrants not Jewish

Nearly two thirds of new immigrants from the former Soviet Union arriving during the
first half of 2000 are not Jewish, according to data presented to Diaspora Affairs
Minister, Michael Melchior. The figure is up from 50 percent during the same period last
year.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Melchior said, "I was in Moscow and
Kiev, I visited embassies and we could not find Jews. Good people sat there but they had
no connection to Israel or the Jewish people. There was a family of eight that had a
grandfather who was a quarter Jewish and had died some 20 years earlier."
On this basis, Melchior repeated his view that the "grandchild clause" in the
law of return should be canceled. According to this, the grandchild of a Jew has the right
to immigrate to Israel even though he and his parents may not be Jews. Melchior argues
that the "grandchild clause" undermines the purpose of the law of return.
